This is Katie's first time in Taiwan. She came with great enthusiasm to introduce Sussex to us and hope to welcome more and more Taiwanese students in the future to Sussex.

Sussex cooperation with National Taiwan University
The University of Sussex is proud to be one of the first UK universities to establish an institution-wide student exchange programme in Taiwan. The student exchange, with National Taiwan University, offers talented undergraduate students the opportunity to study at Sussex and NTU as visiting students. This year, three of our UK students are enjoying a semester at NTU, and three students from NTU's College of Management are spending a term at Sussex. We hope to increase the number of places in 2009.

HISTORY歷史
The University of Sussex was founded in 1961 — the first of a wave of universities established in the 1960s to widen access to Higher Education and improve social mobility within the UK (the others that followed included York, East Anglia, Essex, Lancaster, Kent and Warwick). We were founded as a pioneering institution and quickly became identified with:

LOCATION地點
Sussex is a campus university, an hour from Central London and just outside Brighton — the UK’s most exciting seaside city. Students therefore get the best of both worlds — a safe and convenient place to study, but just a short journey away from the shopping, restaurants and culture in Brighton and London.

Q How many international students do you have? What are their nationalities? 您有多少國際學生？他們的國籍為何？
A Over 20% of our 11,000 students come from outside the UK, but we are proud to have a very diverse international student community, with no more than 200 students from any one country. Our largest international groups come from the USA and India. We also have sizeable communities from Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, Nigeria — in addition to many European students.

A In 07/08, there were around 25 Taiwanese students studying at Sussex — in addition to around 20 Chinese students from Hong Kong and 140 from mainland China. We hope to welcome more Taiwanese students to Sussex in the future!

Q What are your policies for allocating international student accommodation-wise? 安排國際學生宿舍的政策為何？
A Our international students are guaranteed university-managed accommodation for their first year at Sussex, providing they apply before the 1st August deadline. Most of our accommodation is on the Sussex campus, although we also have residences in Brighton — just a short bus or train journey from the campus.
我們錄取的國際學生第一年保證有學校宿舍，前題為要在八月一日截止前申請。大部份的宿舍位於校園內，另在布萊頓有宿舍，搭短程巴士或火車即可到校上課。

Q Do you tend to place your international students in the same halls? 國際學生會住在同一棟宿舍嗎？
A Normally students are integrated – unless they have a special request. However, most postgraduate students in halls are from overseas, as UK postgraduate students usually tend to live in private rented accommodation.
安排學生宿舍不分國籍－除非學生特殊要求，不過，住在宿舍的大多是國際研究生，英國研究生通常選擇在外租房子。

Q Which are the most popular areas of study for your international students, especially those from the greater China area including Taiwanese students? 最受大中華地區及台灣學生歡迎的學習領域為何？
A Some of our most popular subject areas for postgraduate study include:

Some of our most famous research institutes include SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research) and IDS (the Institute for Development Studies). In fact, Dr Lai Shin-yuan, Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council, completed two degrees at IDS — and MPhil and DPhil in development studies.

Q What are the most common barriers for admission for Taiwanese students applying for these programmes? Low GPA and/or IELTS grades? Irrelevant work experiences / 1st degree? 台灣學生申請最常見的阻礙為何？低平均成績及／或IELTS成績？不相關的工作經驗／大學學歷？
A Most of our postgraduate degrees do not require work experience, although it is a huge benefit if students do have some. We typically require between 70 and 85% for entry to postgraduate courses, depending on the degree at Sussex and the home university of the student. Most students find the biggest challenge is meeting the English language requirement. We require IELTS 6.0, 6.5 or 7.0, depending on the course, and it can be a struggle to reach this level while resident in Taiwan. That’s why many students do pre-sessional English before the start of their degree. We recommend one month for each 0.5 band, and the last month’s tuition is free for postgraduates (refunded upon progression).大部份研究學位不需要工作經驗，若有可為錄取加分。我們特別要求在校平均成績要拿到 70至85%。大部份學生覺得英語要求最難，我們的要求依科系不同為IELTS 6.0, 6.5 或7.0，在台灣要達到可能很難，因此許多學生來唸碩士英語先修課程，差0.5分建議唸一個月，達到入學標準者最後一個月的學費可從碩士學費中扣抵。

A We are looking for students who我們要的學生是:

Q What are the most common problems for a Taiwanese student to encounter in the process of successfully completing their studies in your organisation academically? 台灣學生成功完成學業所面臨最普遍的問題是什麼？
A The majority of Taiwanese students at Sussex are very successful in their course of study. The most difficult aspect for postgraduate students is normally English language learning. Students who choose to do a postgraduate degree in English are undertaking a huge challenge — it is very tough, but also extremely rewarding. The university aims to provide a high level of support to international students in this area — both before they start their degree (pre-sessional English) and during their study (in-sessional English). A small proportion of students also struggle with other aspects of university life, such as adjusting to British food, UK weather and cultural differences.
大多數的台灣學生在課業上很成功，覺得最困難的部份通常是英文，碩士英文很艱難，但達成挑戰時會感到很有收獲。本校提供國際學校相關支援－無論是課程開始前的碩士英語先修課程還是課程中的英語支援課程，少數學生不適應大學生活，例如不適應英國食物、天氣及文化差異，我們都會提供協助。

Q What do you recommend people who are interested in studying in your university to do in preparation for their studying and application? 您提供給有興趣就讀貴校學生的準備及申請建議為何？
A We recommend students start preparing early for studying in English — not just on exam preparation, but also on English for academic purposes, e.g. English for taking notes, writing essays, speaking in class. Students should also do plenty of research to make sure they choose the best course for them — by consulting an education advisory services, visiting the university web site, meeting university representatives and of course using the helpful forums on Hello UK!
我們推薦學生盡早準備英語－不只是為了考試更為了學術目的，例如記筆記、寫論文、課堂討論。學生應做大量的功課，確認自己選擇了最適合的課程－可諮詢教育顧問、看本校網頁、與代表面談，當然更可使用Hello UK的討論區。

Q What helps can they get when studying in your organisation? 學生在貴校就讀時能獲得的支援為何？
A Our International and Study Abroad Office (ISAO) is there to help students make the most of their time at Sussex and deal with any problems they encounter. During the main arrival weekend in September, our teams of student helpers will be at airports to welcome students to the UK, answer their questions and direct them to coaches and trains. Students will then join the welcome programme — a week-long series of events, with information sessions on academic matters, finance, health and immigration, local tours and a big welcome party to meet other international students. Our ISAO can provide advice on immigration, finance and living in the UK — or just a friendly face if students feel like they need someone to talk to. We have dedicated international advisors for students who speak Chinese.
國際及海外留學辦公室ISAO能幫助學生解決問題，九月抵校時，即有人協助新生，包括機場接機、回答問題、指導通勤事宜，而為期一週新生訓練則提供上課、財務、健康、入境、旅遊相關事宜，並舉辦大型歡迎會。ISAO能建議並聆聽學生需求，其中包括會說中文的成員能協助您。

Q Do you have any scholarship scheme especially for Taiwanese / international students? Can you let us know more about it? 您可提供任何獎學金給台灣／國際學生嗎？請解釋？
A Our Chancellor’s International Scholarships support the best in global talent, offering financial support to up to 40 exceptional students each year. If a student is a high flyer, winning one of our merit-based scholarships will boost their CV and help make their dreams of studying in the UK a reality. Our International Scholarships are worth £2,500 each year, awarded on academic merit to the very best students and available for all undergraduate and postgraduate degrees (except those in the Institute of Development Studies and the Brighton and Sussex Medical School). Q Do you know any good Chinese restaurants / supermarkets around the university that you can recommend to your Taiwanese students? 您知道大學附近有不錯的中國餐館／超巿可推薦台灣學生嗎？
A Brighton has more restaurants per resident that anywhere in the UK outside London, so there is a huge choice of dining options to suit a range of budgets, including good value Chinese and Italian food. One popular Chinese restaurant for students is China China, which serves affordable Cantonese-style food, such as roast pork and duck, dim sum, and fried noodles (on Preston Street). For the most up-to-date information, students should pose questions for our current students on Hello UK — I’m sure they will know of the best places!

Q Are degrees from your university particularly favourable to some industries when it comes to job hunting? 貴校學位課程特別受某些企業歡迎有利學生求職嗎?
A Our degrees in SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research), such as:

Q Do you know of any Taiwanese students from your university who had successfully found a job after finishing their studies and stayed to work in the UK? 您知道任何台灣畢業生成功在英國就業嗎？
A Historically, Sussex has had a small number of Taiwanese students and most have returned to Taiwan after graduation. They have pursued a wide range of careers in Taiwan. Perhaps our most well-known Taiwanese graduate is Dr Lai Shin-Yuan, Chairperson of the Mainland Affairs Council, who did two degrees at Sussex - an MPhil and DPhil in Development Studies.
本校有少部份台灣學生在英國就業，大部份回國發展。他們在台灣發展事業十分成功，包括陸委會的賴幸媛博士。
Now that the UK government is extending the opportunities for overseas students to work in the UK after graduation, we expect more Taiwanese students to stay on and try to gain work experience in Brighton or nearby London.
現在英國政府允許國際畢業生留在英國工作兩年，我們希望更多台灣學生留下來，在布萊頓或倫敦附近就業。
