我想跟朋友敘述昨天總統先生在記者會中的表現
可是我不太確認
道歉和認錯在英文表述上程度有沒有差別呢?
因為我覺得
如果沒有錯
幹麻道歉呢?
所以中文裡他道了歉但不認錯這種好奧妙的敘述
一聽
我突然愣在那
懷疑是自己中文變很差
還是這兩個詞其實是一樣? 或不一樣的呢?

我試寫了兩個句子
哪個會比較貼切呢?
1.During the press conference, he apologised several times but refused to admit any mistakes.
2.During the press conference, he apologised several times but declined to take any responsibility.

還是有更好的動詞可以拿來表達中文裡的道歉和認錯呢?

英文中apologize 其實並不一定完全是道歉的意思喔。拉丁文字根apologos:apo,'from,off' logos,'speech'字的原意其實是self-justification,為你自己做辯護之意。

所以如果你說他道了歉但沒有認錯,用apologize 是比較好的用法。

而如果一個人認錯,說了sorry,就有為了所做的事情負全責的意思。

In English, 道歉 is "apology", as a noun, or "to apologise", as a verb. 認錯 is "admission of mistake" or "to admit mistake".

If you check an English dictionary, the word apology is defined as follows:

引用

  • written or spoken expression of one's regret, remorse, or sorrow for having insulted, failed, injured, or wronged another: He demanded an apology from me for calling him a crook.
  • a defense, excuse, or justification in speech or writing, as for a cause or doctrine.
  • (initial capital letter, italics) a dialogue by Plato, centering on Socrates' defense before the tribunal that condemned him to death.
  • an inferior specimen or substitute; makeshift: The tramp wore a sad apology for a hat.

The word mistake is defined as follows:

引用

  • an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc.
  • a misunderstanding or misconception.

The word admit is defined as follows:

引用

1. to allow to enter; grant or afford entrance to: to admit a student to college.
2. to give right or means of entrance to: This ticket admits two people.
3. to permit to exercise a certain function or privilege: admitted to the bar.
4. to permit; allow.
5. to allow or concede as valid: to admit the force of an argument.
6. to acknowledge; confess: He admitted his guilt.
7. to grant in argument; concede: The fact is admitted.
8. to have capacity for: This passage admits two abreast.

In the context of President Ma's performance in the press conference, the most appropriate meaning for each word is:
apology: written or spoken expression of one's regret, remorse, or sorrow for having insulted, failed, injured, or wronged another

mistake: an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc.

admit : to acknowledge; confess

Based on the definitions above, apology (道歉) and "admission of mistake(s)" (認錯) have different meanings but yet are connected in that one would typically admit mistakes before issuing an apology. Put it in another way, admission of mistakes motivates the act of apologising.

In the case of Mr Ma, by admitting the errors of judgement (e.g. underestimate the typhoon's destruction effects and human costs) and actions (e.g. delay in mobilising troops and central government resources to help in the rescue missions), he made a formal apology in front of the international and domestic press.

Of course, we can also argue for the case of using apology as "self-justification". There might be some truth to this usage if we point out how Ma defended the actions and decisions taken by his administration after the typhoon. In effect, he became an "apologist" of his own administration by evading criticism and making excuses for its lack of compassion and gross negligence.

So in the press conference, both senses of apology have been observed in the words of spoken by President Ma. The result is that he has lost credibility and sincerity in the eyes of many, both in Taiwan and around the world!

So can we say to Mr. President "Sorry seems to be the hardest word"?

看到樓上提到"說了sorry,就有為了所做的事情負全責的意思"
突然想起這首英文老歌
覺得現在這個時候還蠻適合點這首歌給總統先生來唱一唱! :ohWTF
