Sri Lanka counts sea surge dead
Nearly 11,000 people died after sea surges struck long stretches of the Sri Lankan coast on Sunday, officials say.
Many more people are reported missing and about a million are homeless. The government has declared a disaster.
Among the dead are at least 72 foreign tourists, the chairman of Sri Lanka's Tourist Board said.
Although 1,600km from the earthquake epicentre, waves struck Sri Lanka with great force, sweeping far inland. A huge search is underway for survivors.

The Legend of Chinese New Year
A long time ago in China, there was huge, destructive monster named Nien that terrorized villages throughout China. He usually appeared at dawn of a new year looking for food because he was very hungry. During this time, people would hide inside their homes, afraid to come out. One day, by chance, a big piece of red cloth was hung from a tree limb. Upon seeing the cloth, Nien became afraid and ran away terrified, never to be seen again. To ward off further attacks, each new year, people gather together and celebrate the occasion with red and gold paper, firecrackers and prancing movements of a dragon and lion to keep Nien away.*

The Chinese New Year Season lasts for an entire month...
If you live in an area that has a Chinatown, chances are that at some point you've watched the Chinese New Year celebrations. However, Chinese New Year (also called the Spring Festival) doesn't begin and end on a single weekend.
Instead, it runs from the middle of the last month of the previous year (based on the Chinese calendar) to the middle of the first month of the new year.
By the time the New Year arrives, families have already spent several days preparing for the big event; cleaning the house, buying gifts, and cooking festive foods.

FAR OUT IN THE OCEAN THE WATER IS AS BLUE AS THE PETALS OF the loveliest cornflower, and as clear as the purest glass. But it is very deep too. It goes down deeper than any anchor rope will go, and many, many steeples would have to be stacked one on top of another to reach from the bottom to the surface of the sea. It is down there that the sea folk live.

Little Nutbrown Hare, who was going to bed, held on tight to Big Nutbrown Hare's very long ears. He wanted to be sure that Big Nutbrown Hare was listening.
"Guess how much I love you," he said.
"Oh, I don't think I could guess that," said Big Nutbrown Hare.
"This much," said Little Nutbrown Hare, stretching out his arms as wide as they could go.
Big Nutbrown Hare had even longer arms. "But I love YOU this much," he said.
Hmm, that is a lot, thought Little Nutbrown Hare.

Little Snow-White
http://www.pitt.edu/...h/grimm053.html
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
Once upon a time in midwinter, when the snowflakes were falling like feathers from heaven, a queen sat sewing at her window, which had a frame of black ebony wood. As she sewed she looked up at the snow and pricked her finger with her needle. Three drops of blood fell into the snow.
The red on the white looked so beautiful that she thought to herself, "If only I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood in this frame."

Once upon a time there were three little pigs and the time came for them to leave home and seek their fortunes.
Before they left, their mother told them " Whatever you do , do it the best that you can because that's the way to get along in the world.
The first little pig built his house out of straw because it was the easiest thing to do.
The second little pig built his house out of sticks. This was a little bit stronger than a straw house.
The third little pig built his house out of bricks.
One night the big bad wolf, who dearly loved to eat fat little piggies, came along and saw the first little pig in his house of straw. He said "Let me in, Let me in, little pig or I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in!"
"Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin", said the little pig.

Learning languages enhances the brain, scientists believe
Learning a second language "boosts" brain-power, scientists believe.
Researchers from University College London studied the brains of 105 people - 80 of whom were bilingual.
They found learning other languages altered grey matter - the area of the brain which processes information - in the same way exercise builds muscles.

Immigrants 'should try to feel British'
http://news.bbc.co.u...ics/1699847.stm
UK Home Secretary David Blunkett has urged people from ethnic minorities to develop what he calls a "sense of belonging" in Britain.
In a newspaper interview, he says racism is often deep-seated and must be confronted, but immigrants who settle here must do their bit to ensure that future generations grow up "feeling British".
