When Don Anderson, the Marketing Director for the hamburger chain Mickey's, who helped develop the "Big One," its most popular menu item, learns that independent research has discovered the considerable presence of faecal matter in the meat, he travels to the town of Cody, Colorado to verify if the local slaughterhouse, the main supplier for Mickey's, is guilty of sloppy production techniques. Sub-plots include the exploitation of illegal immigrants from Mexico, the expectations of fast food restaurant employees and how they are treated, and the efforts of a small group of young anti-corporate activists to save the cattle from horrendous conditions. 14th August (Friday) 6:45pm Italianamerican (1974) Director: Martin Scorsese Country: USA Language: English Running Time: 49 minutes Martin Scorsese's parents, Catherine and Charles Scorsese, feature in this homemade documentary acting as themselves. The Scorseses talk about their experiences as Italian immigrants in New York among other things, while having dinner at their flat on Elizabeth Street. Scorsese's mother also instructs how to cook her meatballs, a recipe later featured in the credits of the film. Among the subjects discussed in the film are family, religion, their origins, Italian ancestors, life in Italy after the war, the hardships of poor Sicilian immigrants in America striving to make ends meet. 8:00pm Dumplings (2004)(就是楊千嬅演的"餃子"啦) Director: Fruit Chan Country: Hong Kong Language: Mandarin/Cantonese Running Time: 91 minutes Wealthy Mrs. Li is losing her attractiveness and longs for passion with her husband, who is later revealed to be having an affair with a much younger woman. In order to boost her image, she seeks out the help of Aunt Mei, a local chef. Mei cooks her some special dumplings which she claims to be effective for rejuvenation. These wondrous dumplings keep Mrs Li hooked, and she soon realises that she is no longer able to live without them…and the ‘secret ingredient’? Unborn human foetus! 15th August (Saturday) 4:45pm The Cook (1918) Director: Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle Country: USA Running Time: 22 minutes In an attempt at greater efficiency, the chef of a fancy ocean-side restaurant and his assistant wreak havoc in the establishment. Adding to the complications is the arrival of a robber. 4:45pm La Finestra di Fronte/ Facing Windows (2003) Director: Ferzan Ozpetek Country: Italy/Turkey/Portugal/UK Language: Italian Running Time: 106 minutes Giovanna’s life consists of her thankless job as an accountant and a passionless marriage to a man (Filippo) who can’t seem to take charge of his life. They argue about money, sex, time and work... unresolved tensions simmer in their seemingly settled life. A random encounter with an elderly man who suffers from amnesia brings about a spark of mystery and understanding into their lives. Every night Giovanna silently observes Lorenzo (a young man) who lives in the opposite building; their facing windows allow a partial view into each other’s lives. Giovanni and Lorenzo fall in love; their relationship intensifies and grows more complicated as Giovanna finds out more about Lorenzo through the old man’s accounts of the autumn of 1943. 7:30pm Monty Python’s Flying Circus: Spam (1970) Country: UK Language: English Running Time: 3 minutes Two customers are trying to order breakfast from a menu that includes the processed meat product in almost every dish. 7:30pm Tampopo (1985) Mysterious trucker Goro rides into town like a modern Shane to help Tampopo, a widowed noodle chef, set up the perfect fast-food ramen (noodle) restaurant. Woven into the narrative are numerous stories about the importance of food, ranging from a gangster who mixes hot sex with food to an old lady who terrorizes a shopkeeper by compulsively squeezing the merchandise in the store! Tampopo is an inspired and humorous paean to the joys of food!
