    Questions answered by
    Emma Mylett from International Office
Emma has been here many times and is very familiar with Taiwanese students. She gave some very sincere advices especially on how students should be realistic about the time frame they need to prepare and improve their English ability and test results.

Q Please give us a brief introduction of your university on its history, location and in what it is specialised.
A University College, Bristol opened in October 1876 with two professors, five lecturers and 99 students. It was the first college in the country to admit men and women on an equal footing. University status was granted in 1909. The University now employs over 5,000 staff and has over 16,000 students.

Q How many international students do you have? What are their nationalities?
A There are around 2,500 international students at Bristol, representing approximately 15% of the student population. They come from 130 different countries and include students from Eastern Asia, Europe, United States, India and Africa.

Q Are Taiwanese students a large group among the international students in proportion?
A There are around 100 Taiwanese students at Bristol each year, representing about 5% of the international community

Q What are your policies for allocating international student accommodation-wise?
A International students are guaranteed University accommodation provided are full-time students in their first year of study and they apply before the deadline.
(There is no policy to place international students in the same halls. Special requests may be met.)

Q Which are the most popular areas of study for your international students, especially those from the greater China area including Taiwanese students?
A Popular areas include: Economics, Finance and Management, Education, Law, Engineering and Computing, Science and Medicine

Q What are the most common barriers for admission for Taiwanese students applying for these programmes? Low GPA and/or IELTS grades? Irrelevant work experiences / 1st degree?
A We have high entry requirements, coupled with high English language requirements and this can act as a barrier for some Taiwanese students

Q What can they do to improve their application?
A Be realistic about the English language requirement. The IELTS score in the offer is the minimum required to succeed on the programme and if this is more than 1.0 higher than the score they are applying with, it is unlikely that they will be able to achieve it before the course starts.

Q What are the most common problems for a Taiwanese student to encounter in the process of successfully completing their studies in your organisation academically?
A The problems encountered by Taiwanese students are common to many international students. One of the main issues is teaching and study styles, which require students to be much more independent than they may have been at undergraduate level, language barriers can also be an issue. There is support in place to help students to overcome these problems

Q What do you recommend people who are interested in studying in your university to do in preparation for their studying and application?
A The majority of our Taiwanese applicants are at postgraduate level. Many of our Masters degrees are highly competitive and have a limited number of places, therefore meeting the minimum entry requirements is essential. It is also important that the application form demonstrates a clear understanding of the programme and motivation to study the subject. If possible it is recommended that students consider taking a pre-sessional course, which in addition to enhancing language skills, provides an introduction to UK culture and teaching styles.

Q What helps can they get when studying in your organisation?
A There is a network of pastoral and academic support available to stuents including: International Advice and Support, student societies, medical and counselling services, insessional English language programmes, Jobshop, academic tutor appointments and subsidised sports and social activities.

Q Do you have any scholarship scheme especially for Taiwanese / international students? Can you let us know more about it?
A There is an international scholarship for postgraduate students. Students holding an offer from the university can apply by answering an essay question. The scholarship is for £2,000, which is deducted from the tuition fee

Q Do you know any good Chinese restaurants / supermarkets around the university that you can recommend to your Taiwanese students?
A There are a number of Chinese restaurants and shops around the city and within close proximity to the university.
